Julie has been experimenting in the fibre medium for over twenty years. Originally a quilter taught by her mother, Julie took a fibre art course at Olds College, in Olds Alberta from fibre artist Judith Baker Montano, creating her first “crazy-quilt landscape”. It was this combination of embroidery with quilting, that moved Julie to experiment and develop her own unique compositions from fabric and thread. Julie’s artwork is inspired by the Canadian landscape, and she is drawn by the challenge of creating depth and textures through fabric and thread. By hand-painting the sky fabrics, each picture is brought to life and given a paint-like quality that draws the viewer deep into the scene. From a distance, the fabric landscapes can easily be mistaken for paintings, but a closer inspection reveals the intricate detail of the textile medium. Julie studied Clothing & Textiles at the University of Manitoba and has worked as a fabric buyer, merchandiser, instructor and retail entrepreneur in Winnipeg. After a twelve year hiatus from her art to focus on raising four children, Julie has returned to her studio to create landscapes and paint fabric.
