Arviat
PLACE OF THE BOWHEAD WHALE
Known for its abundant wildlife, Arviat is located in the south of the Kivalliq region of Canada’s arctic. Hundreds of polar bears will gather here awaiting the freezing of the open Arctic Ocean in order to start their winter hunt. Art from this community is often adorned with intricate beadwork which you will find on amautiit (parkas), jewellery, and carvings. The local carving stone is a steatite mix and is very dense and hard, which in part explains the minimalistic carving style of the region
