Kimmirut THE HEEL The name Kimmirut is in reference to the heel-shaped hill found near the community. It is the southernmost community on Baffin Island in the Qikiqtaaluk region of Nunavut. Precious gemstones including sapphire, tourmaline, zircon, moonstone, garnet, and lapis lazuli can be found within the surrounding hills. Serpentinite stone is used locally for carving; it is often greenish in colour but may range to brown and black as well.
