Way up in northern Canada, in the territory of Nunavut, lies the little hamlet of Cape Dorset. The community is home to people known as Inuit, who have a long tradition of living off the land in the harsh environment of the far north. They fish, hunt land animals such as polar bears, caribou, and muskoxen, and take to the sea—or to the ice in winter—to hunt whales, seals, and walruses. Because Inuit are dependent on all of these animals for their survival, they have long included images of the creatures in their local arts and crafts. Around 1960, Inuit in Cape Dorset started a printmaking studio as a way to share their art and culture with people from around the world. Ever since, their beautiful prints have been prized by art and animal lovers worldwide.
