This is a Boeotian drinking cup (kantharos) representing a snake in the metope. In antiquity, the snake was associated with chthonic deities and was extensively used in jewellery as a symbol capable of averting evil. This particular representation could be explained by the possible ritual use of the cup. 5th c. BC.
