Olympus: The Greco-Roman Collections of Berlin features over one hundred and sixty objects from the Antikensammlung der Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (Collection of Classical Antiquities of the National Museums in Berlin), one of the most celebrated holdings of its kind worldwide and rarely seen outside of Europe. In an historic partnership with Berlin, the Winnipeg Art Gallery and the Musée de la civilisation in Québec City were the only Canadian institutions to host Olympus, the first major antiquities exhibition from the National Museums in Berlin to tour North America.
These marble statues and reliefs, bronze statuettes, terracotta vases, and jewellery introduce us to the world of Greek and Roman art, mythology, and religion. From the time of Homer and Hesiod, classical myths and legends have remained a source of inspiration and discovery, sustained in part by a legacy of artistic expression and innovation.
Embodying two civilizations, the works included in the Olympus exhibition are directly linker to the birthplace of architecture, language, law, medicine, sport, and theatre, fundmentals that have helped define the very nature of our modern culture.
Every purchase you make directly supports the work of the Winnipeg Art Gallery and Qaumajuq.
