Relief of Aphrodite
The naked figure of the goddess of love holding a shell in her hands is modeled on the iconographic type of Aphrodite Anadyomene, a Hellenistic motif alluding to the myth of the goddess begotten by the waves. The bone relief plaques with mythological representations, especially from the cycles of Aphrodite and Dionysus, decorated jewel caskets, cosmetic boxes and luxury furniture. Although they were made by unsophisticated craftsmen, they often echo great creations of ancient Greek art. Egypt, 2nd century AD. Terracotta replica.
