John was born in tdly Kué (Fort Simpson). His carvings explore the complex relationship between humans and nature. In stone, he reimagines motifs from the Dehcho Dene stories and legends from his youth. The possibility of transformation is an intriguing theme for John. While carving, he feels energized which paradoxically brings a calm focus and balance to his world. He loves feeling like he is in control of the creative process, but knows that when the stone presents other ideas, he has to respond!
