WHERE THE RIVER WIDENS
Baker Lake is the only inland community in Canada’s arctic, located on the Thelon Heritage River in the Kivalliq region. Known for its arts community, Baker Lake enjoys the Jessie Oonark Centre which houses workspaces for carvers, seamstresses, jewellers and printmakers. Carvings from this area are made from local basalt stone and are often minimal in style, in part due to the hardness of the stone. Cultural imagery is often seen in carvings and prints, with families and camp life as a focus.
